Lyrics

Like a Fire Needs a Match

I never wanted to show the world, how all my tricks were done
Half a dozen years ago, I was dancing in the sun
I’ll write my story on the matchbooks, that lit the bridges that I’ve burned
Trying to run from all the losses, that I couldn’t overturn

I had no stories before we met, but now I have them all in spades
I play may cards close to the vest, still have a few left up my sleeves
To deal with the scars the world can see, I leave the hidden ones alone
I’ll take the matchbook stories out to read, if I ever make it home

I need you and God to know, I got a few things left to do
Dig a hole and hide the past, instead of dragging it to you
Because I’m needing to repair me, but you’re thinking it’s a trap
That I want to be attached to you, like a fire needs a match

I put the writing on the wall I built, with all the stones I threw
At glass houses that I lived inside, since the night I first met you
I built a raft with all the wood left over, from those bridges that I burned
So now I can slowly drift away, and hope the tide will turn

I need you and God to know, I got a few things left to do
Dig a hole and hide the past, instead of dragging it to you
Because I’m needing to repair me, but you’re thinking it’s a trap
That I want to be attached to you, like a fire needs a match
